Sudoku mode: a 9×9 board and 3×3 boxes

The same pieces, but the board is divided like a sudoku grid into nine 3×3 boxes. Besides rows and columns, a full box clears too. This isn’t sudoku with numbers; only the layout comes from it.

Scoring is the same: a 3×3 box counts as one line. Close a row and a box in one move and that’s two lines: +60. Scoring table.

Strategy

  • Think in boxes. A 3×3 piece that lands squarely in an empty box clears it at once, and a 2×3 fills two thirds of one. Keep one box empty and even the most awkward piece is no problem.
  • Stay inside the lines. A piece lying across two boxes gets in the way of closing both. Keep it within one box when you can.
  • Work from two sides. Leave the cell where a box and a row cross for last, and one piece closes both: +60, and more on a combo.

General tips.

Why it feels different

With more ways to clear, the game is more forgiving: if a row won’t come, a box will. That’s why the generator deals heavier pieces from the start, with S, Z and big corners more often. You get more moves, and each one takes more thought.
