How to play Blok

The rules are simple, and once you know them one question remains: in which order and where do these three pieces go? Everything is below, with exact points.

A line about to clear is lit up in advance

The rules

  1. The board is 8×8 cells (9×9 in Sudoku mode).
  2. You get three pieces at a time and choose the order. Pieces can’t be rotated, so each orientation is its own shape.
  3. A piece can only go on empty cells.
  4. A full row or column clears at once, and one move can fill several lines.
  5. When all three are placed, three new ones arrive.
  6. The game ends when none of the remaining pieces fits. A dimmed piece has no spot right now, but another piece may open one by clearing a line.

Scoring

Each placed cell gives +1. The line bonus grows with the number of lines cleared in one move:

In one moveBonus
1 line+20
2 lines+60
3 lines+120
4 lines+200
5 lines+300
6 lines+420

If the board ends up completely empty after a clear, you get another +300.

Combos

If each piece you place clears a line, the combo grows and the line bonus is multiplied: the second ×2, the third ×3 and so on, up to ×8. The first piece that clears nothing breaks the combo. A combo carries over between trays.

Combo1 line2 lines3 lines
first clear+20+60+120
×2+40+120+240
×3+60+180+360
×5+100+300+600
×8+160+480+960

Cell points are not multiplied, only the line bonus.

Example. A 4-cell piece closes two lines on a ×3 combo: 4 + 60 × 3 = 184 points.

The pieces

There are 35 shapes: 1×1 (rare), long bars (3, 4, 5 cells), 2×2, 2×3 and 3×3 blocks, corners, T, S and Z, and L shapes. Every tray is random but fair: at least one piece from a new tray always fits (the daily mode has no such guarantee, because everyone gets the same pieces). As your score grows, awkward shapes come more often.

Controls

  • Phone: grab a piece with your finger and drag it onto the board. It floats above your finger and its ghost shows where it lands.
  • Mouse: drag the same way.
  • Keyboard: 1, 2, 3 pick a piece, the arrows move it, Enter places it, Esc cancels.

FAQ

Can I rotate pieces?

No. That is why planning matters: the orientation you need may not come in the next tray.

Is there an undo?

No: to keep the leaderboard fair, a placed piece stays placed. Check the ghost before you let go.

When does the game end?

When none of the remaining pieces fits on the board. There is no time limit.

If I end the game myself, does the score count?

Yes. The new game button ends the game at the current score and submits it.
