Blok: tips and strategy

We tested the game on thousands of bot games. The biggest difference is neither speed nor luck: a bot that plans the whole tray ahead scored five times more than one that thinks about each piece separately.

A board with room left for big pieces

1. Think through the whole tray first

Before placing the first piece, picture where all three will go. Start with the most awkward one, usually the 3×3, the 1×5 or a big corner. The easy pieces will still find room later.

2. Keep room for the big pieces

Games usually end not because the board is full but because the shape you need doesn’t fit. After each move, check: is there still room for a 3×3? Is there a free run for the long five? Stack pieces along the edges and in the corners rather than the centre, and a big open area stays in the middle.

3. Don’t leave single holes

A single enclosed empty cell can only be filled by a 1×1, which is rare. A hole like that blocks both its row and its column for many moves. A two-cell gap is risky too: there is no 1×2 piece, so only two 1×1s or part of another shape fit there. When placing a piece, make sure no such gaps are left around it.

4. Clear on consecutive moves

Order changes the score. If two of the three pieces can close a line, place them back to back: the first gives +20, the second +40. Put another piece between them and the combo breaks, so the second gives +20 again. Three clears in a row: 20 + 40 + 60 = 120 points; mixed in with other moves, 60.

5. Two lines in one move

Close two rows, or a row and a column, with one piece and you get +60, or +180 on a ×3 combo. Before letting go, look at the board: lines that would clear are lit, so check whether moving the piece one cell lights a second one.

6. Building up pays, but it’s risky

Deliberately building nearly full lines and closing them in a chain pays well. In testing, a bot that played this way earned 38% more per tray but survived 44% fewer trays. Build while the board is open; once it’s more than half full, make room first.

Remember: there are no “extra chances”. If a piece is dimmed, clear a line with another piece first to make room for it.

FAQ

Which piece should go first?

Usually the biggest or most awkward one. The exception is when another piece clears a line first and makes room for it.

How much does luck matter?

A little in one game, far less over many. On the same generator a random bot gets about 100 points and a planning bot tens of thousands. In the daily mode everyone gets the same pieces, so luck plays no part.

Does it get harder?

Yes, slowly. In Classic, awkward shapes come more often until 40000 points, while the generator’s help fades and finally disappears.
