What you get
- Four boards. Classic 4×4, roomier 5×5 and 6×6, and a very tough 3×3. Each board keeps its own saved game. How hard each one is.
- Daily board. One 4×4 every day, the same for everyone. Your first attempt is ranked. More.
- A fair leaderboard. Today, this-week and all-time tables for each board. The server replays your moves under the rules and works out the score itself.
- Undo, 3 times. You can take back a bad move, but that game is not ranked, and you are told so first.
- Every move is saved. A reload, a language switch or a dead phone battery will not cost you the game.
- Even without a network. You keep playing on the open page. A ranked game’s score is sent when you are back online; a game started offline is not ranked, and the screen says so.
Controls
| Device | Move | Other |
|---|---|---|
| Phone, tablet | Swipe anywhere on the screen (not only on the board) | Buttons at the bottom, one-handed |
| Computer | Arrow keys or W A S D (dragging with the mouse works too) | U — undo, N — new game |
Moves are never lost, however fast you play: there is no need to wait for an animation, the next move is queued and the motion speeds up.
Where the game comes from
2048 was written by the Italian developer Gabriele Cirulli over a weekend in March 2014 and released as open source. Millions played it within weeks. The rules take a minute to learn, but reaching 2048 takes planning, which is why the game is still popular.
