No guess Minesweeper: logic instead of luck

In ordinary Minesweeper the board is random, so the end often leaves two cells where logic cannot help: that is pure luck. In No guessing mode such boards are never given to you.

No guess Minesweeper: logic instead of luck

How it works

  1. The board is created after your first tap: the tapped cell and its neighbours have no mines, so an empty area opens.
  2. The solver plays just like you: it cannot see the mines, it only knows the opened numbers and the total mine count.
  3. If the solver cannot reach the end, the board is thrown away and a new one is made. About one in seven random Expert boards passes; the whole process takes an instant, even on a phone.

A hint pointing to a proven cell

What the solver knows

StepLogicExample
1One numberA 2 with 2 closed cells: both are mines
2Comparing two numbersThe 1-1, 1-2, 1-2-1 patterns
3Working through a small groupAll arrangements in a group of up to 10 closed cells
4The total mine countThe counter shows 0: the remaining closed cells are safe

Boards that would need an overly large group, beyond what a person can see, are also thrown away. The solver’s correctness was checked by enumerating all possible mine arrangements on small boards and with a separate search program on large ones.

What is guaranteed and what is not

  • Guaranteed: at any moment there is at least one provable move. The Hint button finds it and explains why.
  • Not guaranteed: that the game is easy. A proof can be hard, and a mistake still opens a mine: that is where skill comes in.
  • Boards are levelled: in this mode board difficulty (3BV) stays in a set range, for example 155–190 on Expert. On the leaderboard everyone plays equally heavy boards, so a “lucky easy board” does not decide the result.
  • Classic is separate: it has no such check, so a guess may be needed. If that happens, the hint says plainly that no logical move exists. Results go to a separate table.

Which mode to choose

Choose No guessing for calm thinking and to show your skill on the leaderboard. Choose Classic if you miss traditional Minesweeper with its risky endings.

FAQ

Does no guess mean easy?

No. The mine count and board size are the same; only the luck is removed. Some positions need real thought.

How do I know a board is solvable?

Press Hint: it always finds a proven move and shows which numbers it follows from. In this mode it never says there is no move.

How do I recover from a mistake?

Remove the wrong flag. If a mine has already been opened, the “Replay this board” button restarts the same board for practice.
