The levels
| Level | How it fires | Classic: average shots | International: average shots |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sailor | at random, searches around hits, even diagonally | 71.3 | 70.2 |
| Captain | parity: cells a big ship must cross, then finishes it off | 60.5 | 51.8 |
| Admiral | probability density over every legal layout of the remaining fleet | 55.9 | 45.7 |
The numbers come from 2,000 test games in which each level sank the same random fleets. Fewer shots means a stronger opponent.
Duels between levels
| Duel | Classic | International |
|---|---|---|
| Admiral beats Captain | 67.4 % | 68.6 % |
| Admiral beats Sailor | 95.1 % | 95.2 % |
| Captain beats Sailor | 88 % | 88.2 % |
Each pair played 1,000 games, alternating the first move. Even the Admiral loses sometimes: luck plays a big part in Classic because small boats cannot be predicted.
Does the computer cheat?
No. Its code only gets open information: the results of its own shots and the sunk ships. Your fleet is never passed to it. The computer’s own fleet is also placed at random in different styles: along the edges, packed in a corner or scattered.
Which level to start with
- Sailor: for first games and children. You learn to beat it quickly.
- Captain: your main training partner. This is where you feel what parity means.
- Admiral: the real test. If you win 4 games out of 10 against it, you are ready for the online rating.
Your game is saved
After every shot the state is written to your browser. Close the page, switch language or lose your connection and the game continues from the same spot. Games against the computer do not count towards the rating, but your wins per level are tallied.
