Three ground rules
- One person moves at a time. Everyone else stands on solid ground and braces.
- Keep the chain slack. A tight chain shortens your jump and yanks at the worst moment. Close the gap first, then jump.
- Save your stamina. The brace bar tends to run out exactly when you need it most. Where nothing threatens you, let go of Shift.
Obstacle by obstacle
| Obstacle | How to get past |
|---|---|
| Swinging hammers | Run in right behind a hammer as it reaches the end of its swing. Two hammers in a row swing out of step: get past the first, then pause for a beat before the second. A hit knocks you towards the edge, so have a partner brace while you go. |
| Fire jets | The flames switch on and off to a steady rhythm. Watch a cycle or two and cross the moment they die down. Keep your partner close so the chain does not stop you right over the jet. |
| Wind gusts | The wind comes in gusts and pushes you towards the edge. When a gust starts, hold Shift and stop; walk on in the lull. Wind cannot move anyone who is braced. |
| Conveyor belts | A belt carries you its own way. Against the flow, run without stopping, and when you jump off the end, allow for the belt’s speed. |
| Bounce pads | A bounce pad throws you high, but the chain is only 5.5 m long: if your partner is far below, it stops you mid-air. Have them come right up to the pad before you go. |
| Moving platforms | Jump when the platform is coming towards you, not moving away. Do not board together: one rides across while the other waits for the next pass. |
| Vanishing platforms | They stay for a while, then disappear. Cross as soon as a platform appears and do not linger. Whoever is behind should wait for the next cycle on solid ground. |
| Crumbling stones | A stone collapses a moment after someone steps on it and soon returns. Run across in single file without stopping. If the chain will not let you both make it, get back to solid ground and wait for the stones to reappear. |
| Pressure-plate gates | Each gate has a plate on either side, and it stays open while someone stands on a plate. One of you holds the plate on this side while the others go through. Then someone steps onto the far plate so the last player can follow. |
When someone falls
- Everyone up top hits Shift straight away. A second late and the chain drags you to the edge too.
- The one left hanging holds E and climbs the chain. Those above keep still meanwhile.
- At the lip they press Space to spring onto the platform. Only then does everyone let go of the brace.
- If the stamina ran out and everyone went down, climb back up, or hold R to return to the last lit bonfire.
When to hold R
R sends the whole team back, so use it with thought. If everyone is down, or the chain has snagged on an obstacle and nobody can move, it is the quickest way out. If only one person is below and the rest are up top, try hauling them up the chain first: it is often faster than going back. The full rules are on the rules page.
FAQ
Why do we keep falling together?
Usually two people jump at once or nobody is bracing. When one moves and the rest brace, the falls drop sharply.
Can I pull a partner up while braced?
Bracing holds a partner but does not haul them up: the one hanging does the climbing by holding E.
Can two players finish it?
Yes. The maps are built to be finishable by two; with three or four you get more hands, and more chaos.
